Waiariki Institute of Technology continues to offer students the opportunity to get their NCEA level 1 and 2 at no cost through the Certificate in Vocational Studies (C.V.S) which is on offer throughout the Waiariki region in Taupo, Tokoroa, Whakatane, Rotorua, Opotiki and Tauranga.
Dell Raerino, head of department for bicultural, bridging and foundation, foundation learning at Waiariki Institute of Technology says that the CVS programme allows people, particularly Maori, to strive for higher employment opportunities.
“Maori don’t have to become just the worker. At Waiariki, they can do CVS, then Smart Study and Forestry Management. So it’s not just about being in the bush as a worker, but knowing how to manage the asset for the iwi as well.”
C.V.S. is a free qualification that features a variety of student-focussed benefits, such as a high teacher to student ratio, marae based study options, and the ability to gain NCEA Levels 1 and 2 through basic numeracy and literacy skills.
“Many C.V.S. students are the first in their family to gain a qualification, so it can be the start for their whanau as well. Their younger brother or sister can say ‘Well if they can do it, I can too.’"
