Caitlyn DeSanges thought when she finished her schooling at Western Heights High School that would be ‘it’ as far as education went.
She had originally wanted to be an air hostess but felt undecided about whether it was a good career choice. Finding she missed study, Caitlyn picked up a Waiariki Institute of Technology prospectus, spotted a Diploma in Accounting programme, and things just seemed to fall into place from there.
“I have always really enjoyed maths; it was my favourite subject at school so doing something in that area was one of the obvious career options for me.
“I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my learning experience at Waiariki while gaining my diploma and especially enjoyed my tutors for business finance and economics, management accounting, and accounting practices who were so very helpful and caring.”
Securing a part-time position providing support in the accounting division of the Tauhara North No. 2 Trust in 2011 also confirmed to Caitlyn that accounting was the right career path for her. Doing three papers for her diploma while working part-time was such a good experience that Caitlyn opted to gain further qualifications. She is currently studying part time toward the New Zealand Diploma in Business at Waiariki while working full-time for the Trust.
“Having a job with the Trust works really well for me; not only am I learning on the job but I’m also able to apply what I learn at Waiariki to my role on a daily basis. I’m the first student the Trust has employed, and it certainly helps that they are prepared to be flexible so I can attend classes.”
