Waiariki Wins Big At Rotorua Hospitality Awards

01 Jul 2014

Waiariki's hospitality proved an award winner last weekend. Not only did our Hospitality Tutor Thomas George receive the Restaurant Association of NZ 'Icon of Hospitality', former Diploma in Hospitality Management student, Jasdeep Singh (above) won the Waiariki sponsored trophy for 'Outstanding Waiter'.

"I learnt so much about the hospitality industry from Thomas George, from Sharon Wallace, they were my best tutors" says Jasdeep, reflecting on his time at Waiariki.

Now a central part of Rotorua's Indian Star Tandoori Restaurant (which claimed five categories in Sunday's Rotorua Hospitality Awards night), Jasdeep has had three promotions in four years, and now possesses management responsibilities as part of his duties.

"Everyone is congratulating me now and that’s a nice feeling." While admittedly terrified on the night, he now describes the awards experience as "outstanding", remaining humble about his recognition and those who have influenced his career.

"I have been inspired by my boss here at Indian Star, Ray Singh. He taught me “Go hard. As long as the person is coming here, you will have to give them a feeling of safety, of a home”. I let them know that I am here to help them - know what the dishes are on the menu for example - when you can satisfy them that is the best thing."

Congratulations to both Thomas and Jasdeep from all of us here at Waiariki - we're all really proud of each of you!
