Michaela Wood (Kayla), is more than ‘just’ Head Girl at Reporoa College. She is a motivated young lady whose passion for hospitality has seen her excel in the Bay of Plenty Trades Academy classes on the industry, to the point where she has now been selected to compete at the Waikato Culinary Fare’s Barista Secondary School’s competition.
What’s more she comes to Waiariki's Mokoia Campus to train for the event in her own time. We told you she was motivated.
“I’m a little bit n...ervous but excited, as it is a good learning experience for me,” says Kayla, highlighting that she hopes to gain a few pointers from the judge’s comments.
The barista heats will see students from across the region create 6 pre-chosen beverages in 20 minutes. Held on July 2nd at Wintec, Kayla says her family is proud of her having seen the progression she has made through the Waiariki based trades academy.
“I love people and while hospitality was just a job before, now it is more of a passion -I love it,” she smiles.
“The trades academy is amazing. My tutor, Kelly Parker is amazing. She creates a great environment to learn in because she is so positive and real hands-on, which is good as I’m quite a practical learner.”
As for her favourite drink to prepare? “Cappuccino or a mochaccino” she replies, “But I think that’s because I like drinking those ones most!”
Good luck from all of us Kayla!
