Whakatane

Whakatane, the Pacific jewel of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, has a river mouth boat harbour, spacious ocean beaches and fertile countryside. Surfing, snorkelling, diving, fishing, boating and hunting are favourite pastimes of the locals and visitors alike. Major business industries include farming, horticulture, manufacturing and tourism. Whakatane is just an hour’s drive from Rotorua and Tauranga.
The area offers plenty of recreational opportunities including Te Urewera National Park, the third largest park in New Zealand. Any visitor to the park and Lake Waikaremoana will enjoy stunning scenery.

White Island, about 48 kilometres off shore, is an active volcano and private scenic reserve accessible by boat and helicopter. 1The surroundings are quite surreal and visitors can walk right inside the main crater just above sea level, allowing first-hand experience witnessing nature’s immense power as gas and steam burst up from far below the Earth’s crust.
