This diploma enables students to develop written skills in a number of genre that can be used for professional or personal development. Content includes writing for business (business correspondence, technical text, handbooks and leaflets), for personal use (personal history, poetry, journaling), for profit such as travel writing, fiction and non-fiction, and writing a screenplay. Content also looks at contemporary Māori and other ethnic writers, and more.

Graduates will be able to:
- write competently in a variety of genre;
- demonstrate literary creativity and ability in writing;
- produce written work to a publishable standard and for an appropriate market; and
- complete a portfolio of writing examples.
