Choosing the Right Career
Choosing the right career is often a stressful undertaking. The following simple guide could make your career decisions a bit easier.

Think about the type of person you are, what you are good at, what you enjoy doing and what makes you happy.
Find out what type of jobs will suit you »
Visit www.careerservices.govt.nz, complete quizzes, speak to a career advisor, or Google! There is ample information on the internet. After your research narrow it down to three to six career options.
Learn more about those jobs »
Ask yourself: How can I get into the job? What study or training do I need? What are the future opportunities, growth and pay like?
Then gather information on the courses and qualifications required to meet the job description. Additionally, keep talking to your career advisor and make appointments to speak to two to three people who are doing that job and ask them what they did to get there.

After the first three steps hopefully you will have a better understanding about what it is you want to do. So it's now time to write down your career goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. Now that you know the basic steps, let's get thinking! Ever heard of Dr Holland's Theory? It is the most widely used in career guidance. Basically, it centres on the theory that people are most likely to enjoy, develop and grow in jobs that match their personality. They search for environments that will let them use their skills and abilities, and express their thoughts and values. Makes sense, right?
