Qualification List

Waiariki’s qualifications have been developed specifically to meet the needs of students, industry and the community. These qualifications are aligned with the vocational requirements of industries in this region. Some have been developed nationally and may be offered by other providers and you will see these listed using the words ‘National’ or ‘New Zealand’ in their title.

Degrees
All degrees offered at Waiariki are bachelor degrees. A degree usually requires a minimum of three years full-time study (or the part-time equivalent) and includes courses at Levels 5 to 7. Degree qualifications are generally required for entry or advancement in professions, and provide further stair-casing opportunities for study at masters or doctoral level.

Certificates
Certificates may take from 12 weeks to one year to complete. Courses offered within a certificate can range from Levels 1 to 7. Certificates provide a broad introduction to a range of skills and knowledge in a particular subject area. Certificates at Levels 2 to 4 are often needed for entry into trades and service employment. Certificates can also provide direct entry into diplomas and degrees.

Diplomas
Diplomas generally take between one to two years of full-time study to complete (or the part-time equivalent) and consist of courses from Levels 4 to 7. Diplomas are often required for entry to advanced trade, technical and professional occupations. Diplomas may provide direct entry into a degree qualification and, in many cases, courses from the diploma may be credited toward degree qualifications.

Qualifications Guide »

Waiariki qualifications may cover the requirements of the national qualifications plus additional content to enhance the overall qualification.

All qualifications have a defined Level from 1 to 7 and are registered on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority’s (NZQA) National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Individual Courses »

Qualifications are made up of individual courses. Students can enrol in individual courses without having to complete the entire qualification, enabling them to obtain specific skills or knowledge needed for employment, career advancement or personal interest.

Credit Recognition and Prior Learning »

Waiariki offers a number of options for granting credit toward a qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that assesses evidence of previous formal and non-formal learning. This includes work experience and credit gained at another education provider or at Waiariki in another qualification.

NCEA Unit and Achievement Standards »

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand’s main national qualification for secondary school students and part of the NQF. NCEA unit and achievement standards may be used as entry criteria to various qualifications at Waiariki.

NZQA Accredited »

NZQA quality-assures secondary and tertiary qualifications as well as education providers. All of Waiariki’s qualifications have been quality assured, approved and accredited by NZQA.

Accreditation means that our internal quality systems have been independently evaluated to ensure that the delivery and quality of our qualifications meets approved national standards.
