The New Zealand Aria had its first beginnings as a Rotorua singing competition just after World War II, and is the older of the country’s two national aria singing competitions. It was established for the purpose of holding an annual singing competition in the town, and it was envisaged that this would both promote and encourage singing of fine young voices in the various genres.
Between 2010 and 2014, Waiariki Institute of Technology was the Aria’s principal sponsor. This came about with the establishment of Waiariki’s own Academy of Singing and Music at its main campus in Rotorua, to nurture and develop young singers. This was seen as being complementary to the Aria’s long history of developing fine young singers.
In 2015 Waiariki moved to become the naming right sponsor of the Aria 3rd Prize category.
