  • Tangatarua Hall of Residence - student accommodation

    Within walking distance of the Rotorua campus, Tangatarua Hall of Residence is situated in an open, park-like setting. An affordable accommodation option, the community atmosphere of the residence allows students from all over New Zealand - and the world - to meet and mix. Some of the facilities and services include: Communal kitchen and dining areas, Full time residential manager to ensure your security and safety, Broadband internet available in your room, Table tennis, pool table and games, Free on-site parking.

    The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) has a banking machine on Mokoia Campus for cash withdrawals, account balances and deposit services.

    Buddy Programme

    Make friends from around the world! Waiariki’s Mokoia Campus is buzzing with students from all parts of the world. Most are newcomers to New Zealand so why not sign up to be a buddy for one-on-one exchange and support during the study term? Learn more about your buddy’s country and culture while you teach them about New Zealand’s.

    Free Bus Transport

    Your Waiariki student ID card will include a computer-chipped embedded smartcard which provides free bus services on all Rotorua Cityride routes to Mokoia Campus during the Waiariki semesters, Monday - Friday.

    Waiariki students now have an option to use a free bus service from our regional campuses to the Mokoia Campus in Rotorua. This service is subject to demand, please register with your campus administrator. The following are the bus timetables for each region:

    Hungry? Thirsty? In need of caffeine? Grab breakfast, lunch or a snack. A delicious variety of fresh food and drinks, including healthy food options and espresso coffees, all at reasonable prices. Plenty of comfy indoor and shaded outdoor seating, too. Cash and EFTPOS accepted.

    Careers and Employability Centre (Mokoia Campus)

    This new centre assists students in making the transition from study to work. A careers advisor, job shop coordinator and industry placement coordinator will assist students to think critically about their aspirations and what they can do to enhance their employability through job seeker skills, CV preparation, part-time work, industry projects and recruitment opportunities.

    Childcare Centre

    Nga Tamariki o Te Waiariki Educare Centre is a privately owned operation situated on Mokoia Campus. The centre offers reasonable rates and Work and Income subsidies are available for fulltime and casual places, plus 20 hours ECE for 3- to 6-year-olds. The centre has two spacious rooms and a large outdoor play area.

    Chinese Language Centre (Mokoia Campus)

    In conjunction with the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, Waiariki has developed a Chinese language centre on Mokoia Campus to teach anyone interested in the language and culture. Min Zhang, from Institute of Technology of Xuzhou, has a master's degree in linguistics and has been teaching Chinese to non-native speakers for five years.

    Class Rep System

    Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA) encourages students to be active participants in the processes and structures of the institute. Students can do this by becoming a class rep! Students who take on this role represent their peers in meetings and discussion forums to help improve the quality of education and campus life for all students. Being a class rep is a great opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills. Training is provided.

    Computer Services - All Waiariki Computers

    Using the computers at Waiariki is a privilege and all users are obliged to use this tool in a responsible, effective and lawful manner; misuse is considered a serious offense. Please review the "Computer Access and Usage, eCampus, and Services" and "Student Access and Use of Computers Procedure" sections in your Student Diary.

    To access Waiariki's computer network, email, eCampus, printing and photocopying services, and the IT Helpdesk, your fees must be paid in full. You will use your Waiariki student ID card to access services. Internet Access and Usage.

    Each campus provides computer suites for students to access Office 365, Skydrive, email, internet, applications and printing. Mokoia Campus in Rotorua provides free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) for students' personal devices.

    CS@W (Computer Services at Waiariki)

    Mokoia Campus provides assistance for computer service (PC and laptop) issues or questions. See the IT staff at CS@W in the Library Learning Centre.

    Copy Centre (Mokoia Campus)

    The Copy Centre, located in I Block on Mokoia Campus, provides photocopying, printing, binding and laminating services, and sells a variety of paper and card stock – all at discounted rates.


    Counselling is available to all students to assist in any area causing stress that is having an effect on their study. Our counsellor can provide confidential help with coping with change, study and work challenges, managing anxiety and stress, family and relationship issues, decision making, drug and alcohol issues, or just someone to listen and understand.

  • Disability Support Services

    The Health Centre at Waiariki supports students and staff with disabilities and impairments such as vision, hearing, medical, mental health, physical mobility, specific learning disabilities and learning difficulties.

    Most buildings are accessible by ramp, and mobility parking spaces are available close to your place of study. The local bus company runs an accessible bus on its “Polytechnic” route.

    Assistive technology and equipment (i.e., dictaphone, personal listener/amplifier, notetaker/reader writer) are available to borrow. Learning support referrals, interview and enrolment assistance are also available.

    Full-service hair salons – one on each campus and one in Rotorua's city centre – provide services at competitive prices. Waiariki Hair, Beauty, Body and Spa is located in Rotorua's city centre and provides services including massages, manicures, pedicures, waxing, and facial treatments during term time.

    Health Centre

    Our occupational health nurse provides a range of services at Mokoia Campus that are free and confidential, including health screening (i.e., blood pressure, weight, hearing, blood sugar tests), health monitoring and support for medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, asthma, epilepsy, etc.), sexual health services, treatment for injuries and wounds, and smoking cessation assistance.

  • IELTS Testing Centre

    Waiariki is an official IELTS (International English Language Testing System) testing centre. IELTS tests provide proof of English competency for entry into mainstream qualifications at Waiariki and throughout New Zealand. Waiariki offers IELTS preparation classes full time or part time.

    Information Centre

    The Information Centre, located in N Block, Mokoia Campus, is your one-stop shop to gathering information and advice on Waiariki qualifications, courses, study options and requirements. Staff are on hand to answer any questions, assist with applications, provide take-home materials and more.

  • Learning Advisors

    Waiariki’s team of learning advisors provides free support to all Waiariki students to be successful in their studies and achieve their goals. They work alongside tutors to provide the best possible support for our students’ learning.

    Library Learning Centre

    The library aims to fully support you with your academic work. The friendly staff can assist with: finding, assessing and evaluating, information in various formats, APA reference assistance, provision of library resources to all, students and staff, computer and technical support, provision of study rooms and spaces in the Learning Resource Centre, provision of student ID cards, topping up of your ID card to allow printing and photocopying.

  • Parking

    Free parking is available on all Waiariki campuses (except Tokoroa) for all students and staff. Parking for people with disabilities (you must display your mobility card) is available in designated areas. Visitor parking is also available (ask at reception).

  • Waiariki Community Recreation Centre

    Waiariki believes a healthy community is a happy and prosperous community. In 2010 the Waiariki Community Recreation Centre – Te Pūtahi Hākinakina o Waiariki opened on Mokoia Campus, with funding assistance from Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust. The $1.5 million facility houses a gym, weights room, squash court and sports hall. Discounted student membership fees include access to sports leagues, fitness classes, squash court and the weights and cardio room.

    Kaiwhata Restaurant

    The Kaiwhata Restaurant is located in the heart of Mokoia Campus and opens throughout the year for lunch and dinner service. Delicious, affordable meals and ‘mocktails’ are created by our student chefs-in-training and served by hospitality students. EFTPOS available.

  • Student ID cards

    All enrolled Waiariki students whose fees are paid are provided with a programmed smartcard ID which is used for identity and access to buildings, printing and photocopying, and free bus rides on Rotorua Cityride routes.

    ID cards must be topped up by students with EFTPOS or credit card using the self service KIOSK located in N Block.

    Student Information and Computing Centre

    Students Association

    Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA) provides many services and benefits to Waiariki students, including advice and advocacy, complaints facilitation, and welfare services. There is a common room with microwaves, hot water and telephone and the WITSA shop sells mobile phone top ups, international calling cards, nursing uniforms, fax service, stationery items, laminating, stamps, food and more.

    WITSA provides further benefits to its members such as discounted events and activities, equipment hire, student van, and advice and support regarding: budgeting, Work and Income, StudyLink, landlord and tenant responsibilities, employer and employee responsibilities.

    Study Skills Workshop

    Waiariki Learning Advisors will be running ‘Study Skills’ workshops just before the start of semester. These short study sessions provide an introduction to being a tertiary student.

    The workshop covers tips for: preparing for class; creating a study plan; taking notes; work/life/study balance; understanding assignments, rubics, and marking schedules; and how to review or proof read your assignment.
