Scholarships and Grants

A number of funding opportunities and scholarships are available to assist with your study expenses; some are administered by Waiariki while others are offered through various organisations. Some of the more popular scholarships are listed below. Most scholarships are limited and conditions apply, so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible to increase your chances of being awarded.

Scholarships Administered by Waiariki

Academy of Singing and Music Scholarships

Waiariki Academy of Singing and Music offers three levels of scholarship for select talented musicians and singers. A platinum scholarship covers full academic fees, access to music workshops and individual tuition in music; gold scholarships provide music workshops and musical tuition; and silver scholarships work helps nurture the potential of selected talented youth who are still in intermediate or high school.

Academy of Sport Scholarships

Waiariki Academy of Sport scholarships are available to talented athletes wishing to prioritise their sport and gain a tertiary qualification. Two levels of scholarships are available which cover sport science and medicine support, coaching (in some specialist squads), and full course fees waiver for up to three years of full-time study (Tier 1)

Dillon Scholarship

Bay Trust operates and funds the Dillon Scholarship which provides financial assistance to people who have significant disabilities and who will be undertaking tertiary education.

The Kingi McKinnon Scholarship for Emerging Writers

This scholarship is open to unpublished writers who wish to develop their creative writing skills with a view to achieving publication. The award covers the fees of the Certificate in Applied Writing at Waiariki Institute of Technology for one year.

Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust Scholarships

The Rotorua Trust (Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust) continues to support Waiariki students through a number of scholarship offerings. Up to 10 scholarships with an annual value of $2,000 are available to students currently studying at Waiariki Institute of Technology.

Applications are only accepted from students who currently live in the Rotorua District and are studying full-time at Waiariki Institute of Technology in the year application is made. Please see the application for the eligible qualifictaions.

Scholarships to Lincoln University

Lincoln University Tertiary Fees Scholarships, valued at up to $4,500, will be awarded annually to students who have successfully completed at least one year of full-time tertiary study at a polytechnic, institute of technology, university, or industry training organisation.The number of scholarships awarded annually shall be determined by the Vice-Chancellor of Lincoln University. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit.

TeachNZ

TeachNZ scholarships are targeted to meet increasing demand for teachers in certain areas over the next 10 years.

Waiariki Hoporona Scholarship

Three Waiariki Hoporona ("to gather knowledge") Scholarships are available for Year 13 secondary school leavers from the Waiariki rohe who wish to earn the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6). The scholarships, offered by Waiariki's School of Business and Tourism, cover the tuition fees for the two-year diploma.

Scholarships by Ethnicity

Māori students can access the Māori Education Trust to find out about many grants and scholarships. The site provides information on funding criteria, application dates, contact details and more. This site also lists useful links to iwi authorities, i.e., Ngapuhi, Ngai Tahu, and more.

Hutton & Patchell & Co is a firm of chartered accountants in Rotorua who have a list of Maori Scholarships and grants offered by Maori Trust Boards in the local area.

Maori Soldier's Trust - SIR APIRANA NGATA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Generally scholarships are between $1,000 and $3 ,000, and are available for Maori students studying at any tertiary institution e.g. Polytechnic, University or Wananga. Applications are open to all Maori but in line with the Maori Soldier's Trust Act 1957, where practicable, preference will be given to descendants of Maori World War I veterans.

Scholarships for Women

Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship Trust

The Betty Loughhead scholarship has been established to help women 25 years and older to obtain a qualification to enter the workforce or to advance careers in business, the professions, arts or to change occupation.

The amount varies, at the Trustee's discretion, and may be distributed annually to more than one recipient. The applicants must be enrolled in a NZQA approved education programme, the study of which must be undertaken in New Zealand.
Preference will be given to applicants who have a proven record of academic achievement.

New Horizons for Women Trust

The New Horizons for Women second-chance awards assist women returning to education or training. Awards avaliable include:

  • Rita King Award - up to $2,500.
  • New Horizons for Women Second-chance Award - up to $2,500.
  • New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women Mildred Keir Training Award $2,500.
  • Other awards which may be funded and named by sponsors
