Scholarships and Grants

A number of funding opportunities and scholarships are available to assist with your study expenses; some are administered by Waiariki while others are offered through various organisations. Some of the more popular scholarships are listed below. Most scholarships are limited and conditions apply, so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible to increase your chances of being awarded.

Student Scholarships

Rotorua Trust Scholarships »

The Rotorua Trust (Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust) continues to support Waiariki students through a number of scholarship offerings. Up to 10 scholarships with an annual value of $2,000 are available to students currently studying at Waiariki Institute of Technology.

Applications are only accepted from students who currently live in the Rotorua District and are studying full-time at Waiariki Institute of Technology in the year application is made. You must be studying one of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Applied Management (all majors)
  • Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work)
  • Bachelor of Computing, Communications and Technology (all majors)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design)
  • Bachelor of Māori Development (all majors)
  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Tourism Management
  • Diploma in Culinary Arts
  • Diploma in Hospitality Management
  • Diploma in Forest Management
  • Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
  • NZ Diploma in Business (Level 6)

New Horizons For Women Trust »

NHWT-Peg Hutchison Opportunity Awad 2011

This award is granted to a New Zealand resident woman who is changing direction in her career, and intends working in a field where women are under-represented and/ or is non-traditional for women. Application form>>

NHWT-Research-Awards 2011

Applicants for the research awards may be an individual woman, or group of women who are New Zealand citizens, resident in New Zealand, and are conducting research which is relevant and of value to women and girls in New Zealand. Application form>>

ATTTO Scholarships »

Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) offers:

  • three scholarships for tourism students and
  • three for travel students

worth $3,000 each.

TeachNZ »

TeachNZ scholarships are targeted to meet increasing demand for teachers in certain areas over the next 10 years.

The Kingi McKinnon Scholarship for Emerging Writers »

This scholarship is open to unpublished writers who wish develop their creative writing skills with a view to achieving publication. The award will pay the fees of the Certificate in Creative Writing at Waiariki for one year.

Scholarships to Lincoln University »

Up to 20 Lincoln University Pathway Scholarships are available for Waiariki students in 2010. The scholarships cover the fees for up to two semesters (up to $4,500) at Lincoln University for all students who have successfully completed one academic year at Waiariki. The scholarships may also be used toward LU accommodation, which would assist those students who are able to get fees support from elsewhere. Some conditions apply. read more>>

Maori Students

The Maori Education Trust provides and administers scholarships in education for Maori students. The website provides information on funding criteria, application dates, contact details and more.

  • Scholarship 2010/11 application round opens on 11 October 2010 and all applications available online at www.maorieducation.org.nz
  • Tertiary undergraduate and postgraduate categories close 31 March 2011 and successful applicants informed early 2011

Hutton & Patchell & Co is a firm of chartered accountants in Rotorua who have a list of Maori Scholarships and grants offered by Maori Trust Boards in the local area.

Pasifika Students

Pasifika students can visit Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs for useful suggestions on finding scholarships. (site currently under construction)

Scholarships for Women »

Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship Trust

The Betty Loughhead scholarship has been established to help women 25 years and older to obtain a qualification to enter the workforce or to advance careers in business, the professions, arts or to change occupation.

The amount varies, at the Trustee's discretion, and may be distributed annually to more than one recipient. The applicants must be enrolled in a NZQA approved education programme, the study of which must be undertaken in New Zealand.
Preference will be given to applicants who have a proven record of academic achievement.

ITP New Zealand Rosemary Middleton Scholarships

ITP New Zealand is offering two $2,500 scholarships to support disadvantaged students in a further year of ITP study.

New Horizons for Women Trust

The New Horizons for Women second-chance awards assist women returning to education or training. Awards avaliable include:

  • Rita King Award - up to $2,500.
  • New Horizons for Women Second-chance Award - up to $2,500.
  • New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women Mildred Keir Training Award $2,500.
  • Other awards which may be funded and named by sponsors
Waiariki Academy of Sport Scholarships »

Available to young talented athletes. Full and Partial scholarships including tertiary fees, sports science and medicine support.

Applications are open to athletes in any sport. Sport specific kayak and MTB training squad scholarships also available.

Maori Students

Many of the Māori trust boards, incorporations and land trusts offer either scholarships or grants to tertiary students who have the necessary relationship or whakapapa to them. Please contact your respective trust board to check out whether there are any grants or scholarships that you may be eligible to apply for.
