This diploma provides students with the skills and knowledge required to provide beauty, body and spa therapies at a professional level within a commercial salon and spa environment.

Students will gain experience and develop capability in salon and spa operations, professional practice, client care and communication, anatomy and physiology, consultation and analysis and an extensive range of beauty, body and spa treatments.

Students may move onto further learning in the fields of sports and therapeutic massage, nursing, physiotherapy, osteopathy, homeopathy, naturopathy and alternative spa therapies.

Additional costs for all students

Fees include: text book, uniform top, electrology tweezers, a client gown, and your City and Guilds registration and exams. Equipment will be supplied once your fees are paid or there is evidence you have applied for a student loan.

Please note: There are other items you will need to supply, you can use the course related cost component of your student loan for these costs. A list will be provided once you are accepted onto the programme.

Included qualifications

Certificate in Beautician Services and various City & Guilds awards, diplomas and certificates

To achieve the award of the Diploma in Beauty Therapy students must pass a total of 240 compulsory credits.

To achieve the award of the embedded Certificate in Beautician Services students must pass a total of 120 compulsory credits (all Year 1 courses).

To achieve the various embedded City & Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas, Certificates and/or Awards students must complete units as specified in the City & Guilds syllabus for the respective qualifications.

Knowledge and skills you will gain

Graduates will be able to:

  • monitor and maintain health and safety in a commercial beauty salon and spa environment;
  • demonstrate and maintain professional practice in a commercial beauty salon and spa environment, including a high standard of personal presentation, hygiene and conduct;
  • undertake salon reception duties;
  • promote and sell beauty, body and spa therapy products and services to clients;
  • demonstrate knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology in relation to beauty, body and spa therapies;
  • perform detailed skin, face and body analysis;
  • use effective communication skills to perform comprehensive client consultation, and provide advice to clients on products, therapy treatments and after-care requirements;
  • provide a comprehensive range of beauty therapy services including make-up application and instruction, manicures, pedicures, nail art, hair removal, lash and brow treatments, skin tanning and facial skincare treatments;
  • perform an extensive range of body and spa therapies including head and body massage, stone therapy massage, facial and body electrotherapy, electrical epilation, micro-dermabrasion and body wrapping;
  • develop and analyse client case studies in relation to beauty, spa and body therapies, determine appropriate treatments to meet client needs, and evaluate the effectiveness of therapy treatments provided; and
  • demonstrate knowledge of salon and spa management and operational requirements, including employer and employee roles and responsibilities, working with colleagues, legislative requirements, customer service and retention, and salon workflow, marketing and productivity.

Gain introductory knowledge of cosmetology, and develop skills in make-up selection and application. Develop skills and knowledge in reception and retail functions within the salon environment.
