Course Aim

Contemporary Māori writers and writing allows students to explore some of New Zealand's most powerful contemporary Māori writers and writing. Students will develop capability in analysing the requirements and techniques for writing in an authentic Māori voice and apply principles to own writing.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. explore the background that led to the development of contemporary Māori writing;
  2. assess the impact of contemporary Māori writing and writers from a global perspective;
  3. analyse the principles / purposes of writing about other cultures with accuracy and respect;
  4. categorise the key elements to consider when writing in a Māori voice; and
  5. write in a Māori voice.
