Course Aim

This course is grounded by the whakataukī “Ko tā te kaiako ko te reo, te ahurea me te tuakiri kia eke ai te tamaiti ki tōna pitomata – The educators role is to acquire the skills regarding language, culture and identity in order for the child to fulfil his or her full potential to reach the desired apotheosis”. The course aims to continue supporting students in adding to their kete mātauranga (baskets of knowledge) of teaching and learning by critically examining challenges faced by beginning teachers in an ECE context. Students will investigate strategies to sustain an evidence‐based approach to teaching to improve outcomes for the diversity of learners they will teach to meet the Educational Council of Aotearoa New Zealand ‘Graduating Teacher Standards’ and Tātai ako and Tātai reo competencies.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply critical reflective practice and analyse how it contributes to their ongoing development as a student teacher.
  2. Critically analyse the principles of ako to notice, recognise and respond to the child’s interests and to plan and promote children’s learning.
  3. Critically apply the principles of tangata whenuatanga in order to create a lens that acknowledges the language, culture and identity of the child and their place within Aotearoa New Zealand.
  4. Critically analyse and reflect on how whanaungtanga, ako, manaakitanga, wānanga and tangata whenuatanga inform and challenge their developing practice to formulate, implement and justify a personal professional philosophy of teaching and learning.
  5. Demonstrate aspects of the Educational Council of Aotearoa New Zealand ‘Graduating Teacher Standards’, Tātai ako and Tātai reo competencies for practicum 2 to a satisfactory level or above.
