Course Aim

The aim of this course is to allow students to understand the key elements of the forest industry, its dimensions, structure and place in the New Zealand economy and the significant legislation in relation to the industry. The course will also enable students to understand the key industry requirements in terms of communication, health and safety, and environmental management in forestry operations, and the forest management systems required in forestry to meet operational and legislative requirements. Students will also be required to understand common first aid conditions and provide appropriate responses.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret and explain environmental, health and safety and communication requirements in forestry operations
  2. Investigate and explain an overview of the forest industry
  3. Outline the legislation affecting commercial forestry
  4. Prepare an analysis of a selected forestry region
  5. Outline the requirements of health and safety, fire protection, environmental, and quality management systems applied to the forest industry
  6. Identify, describe and provide appropriate responses to common first aid and life-threatening conditions
