This programme aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to be employed as a support worker in health, disability, and aged support settings.

This programme is delivered to secondary school students only.

Award information

To achieve the National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) students must pass 44 NZQA credits from the compulsory courses

Knowledge and skills you will gain

Graduates will be able to:

  • describe a variety of communication strategies which can be used effectively within the health and/or disability sector;
  • demonstrate understanding of the implications of legislative requirements that impact on a support worker within the health and/or disability sector;
  • describe the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment for consumers and support workers within the health and/or disability sector;
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of the support worker within the health and/or disability sector;
  • demonstrate fundamental knowledge in the development of a service plan and writing a report;
  • outline cultural awareness and identity as being important to the delivery of health care; and demonstrate foundational skills and knowledge around infection prevention and control.

HLTH.2001 Fundamentals in Health Care Delivery
The aim of this course is for students to be able to describe and demonstrate safe work practices that encompass environmental, physical safety and culturally aware practices, at a foundational level within a health and/or disability setting.

HLTH.2002 Communication in Health Care
The aim of the course is for students to describe strategies in meeting communication needs of people with a communication disability, demonstrate understanding of service plans and their purpose and develop skills in report writing.

HLTH.2003 Knowledge of a Support Care Worker in Health Care Delivery
The aim of this course is for students to demonstrate understanding of the role and responsibilities of the support worker in relation to consumers of the health care and or disability setting.
