When the Christchurch rebuild reaches its peak, an estimated 24,000 additional trades workers will be required in Christchurch to keep up with demand. This has led to carpenter being added to Immigration New Zealand’s Canterbury Skill Shortage List.

Despite increasing numbers of electricians, demand for them has remained high and this job appears on Immigration New Zealand’s long-term skill shortage list, which means the government is actively encouraging qualified electricians from overseas to work in New Zealand.
