Selina Lin, Jeena Njezhuvinkel and Yeon Hee Kim are the flowery models of “The ESOL Bunch,” an entry in the 2009 Rotorua Wearable Creations ’n Colour Awards (models Gillian Ma, Kris Lee and Suwanee Karam cannot be seen in the photo). The costume was created by Waiariki students and staff of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department and won Best Stage Presence at the event.
The team said the costume was “inspired by the zing that fl ourishes when different nationalities study English together at Waiariki... and celebrates the vibrancy of each culture, along with the joys of spring.”

Issue 6 - October 2008

Waiariki Today Version 6Front cover photo:

When technology and art meet, you get the spectacular work shown on this edition’s front cover. Level 6 art student Sian Richardson, 26, emulated the style of British pop-artist David Hockney to create this collage of 187 photographs of the front entrance at Waiariki. The images took her less than 10 minutes to take (speed is of the essence) and almost a week to compile in the time-movement “photojoiner”.

No surprise that Sian left her job in retail to attain an art qualification and her favourite genre are graphic design and photography. The former Rotorua Girls’ High School student is well on her way to earning a qualification which will give her more career satisfaction and role-model the benefits of better education to her five-year-old daughter Seraphine. Sian is pictured with Waiariki art lecturer Helen Cooper.
