Department of Education, Social Sciences & Languages

Within this diverse department students can choose between three degrees, two diplomas, a graduate diploma and several certificates. Our education and social science degrees provide opportunities for future teachers and social workers with study leading to registration in their area of interest. Our students range from school leavers to those undertaking a career change or graduate work to enhance their employment opportunities.

Emphasis on practical learning

You'll find Waiariki teaching staff amongst the student group as they update their skills and knowledge through our adult teaching qualifications. On-campus learning for these qualifications is supported by extensive practicum placements, which assist students by putting their learning into practice and helping them to understand employer expectations.

Graduate Diploma

The Graduate Diploma in Mentoring and Professional Leadership provides opportunities for teachers, health professionals, social workers and others involved in mentoring and support, to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

Certificates and diplomas

Our certificates and diplomas lead to employment or higher study. One of these is the study of English for speakers of other languages. This is often a pathway to Waiariki diplomas and degrees.

The presence of Māori, Pakeha, international and new immigrant students makes for an interesting and vibrant learning environment in this department.
