“I still send my photos home” says Scott Zhang with a smile. Having arrived in New Zealand not realising how important the booming tourism industry is to our country, he is now loving life, having graduated from Waiariki with a Bachelor of Tourism Management.
Firmly employed at Rotorua's multi award-wining Wai Ora Resort and Spa as Group Sales Marketing Manager for the Asian markets he reasons "There is a lot of opportunity in New Zealand and Waiariki is really good place to open the door.”
“My tutor at Waiariki, Rose Wood, gave me the inspiration to be part of the tourism industry and showed me its potential. She covered lots of things such as marketing, sales and social media.”
“I gained a 6-month internship at Destination Rotorua, through which I familiarised myself with a lot of local attractions and accommodation options. It was then that I realised that Wai Ora group has lots of potential and now I really love it here, the team is lovely. This is absolutely the right place for me.”
Stating that his friends and family are very proud of his success, Scott is a buzz at the fact that he consistently learns on the job, as tourist operators, media and customers continue to come into the prestigious resort spa from his 'market territories' of China, Japan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and more.
"Tourism in the centre north island is increasing sharply. We see people staying longer and spending more money here. In response, I was the only Chinese staff member here and now we have four on site.”
Turning to pass advice to future Waiariki students he states “I recommend international students try and ‘homestay’. For me, living with New Zealanders meant I could learn a lot of English and how to communicate with tutors.”
