Course Aim

The aim of this course is to interpret the meanings, beliefs and practices relating to all facets of the pa/marae and protocols

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the whakapapa of the Marae and the symbolism of the physical structures and spaces of the pā site
  2. Describe the social structure of the iwi/hapū in relation to the marae complex
  3. Describe the role and various functions of the Marae
  4. Explain marae tikanga/kawa in terms of tangata whenua, manuhiri, tangihanga, hui tangata ora.
  5. Compare tribal tikanga/kawa differences.
  6. Relate the concept of tapu and noa to marae functions and rituals
