The aim of this course is to develop proficiency in the performance of contemporary and traditional Maori music and dance, and develop an understanding of the origins and subjects of waiata, haka and other Māori performing arts.
On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Perform waiata and mōteatea with skill and confidence
- Perform either the poi or haka
- Explain the significant characteristics of waiata, haka and other Māori performing arts, and discuss prominent historical events in the their development
- Relate the historical events, names of places and people referred to in the waiata learned
