Course Aim

Students will develop an understanding of the elements of an array of historical music genres, the relationship between various musical genres and styles, why various styles exist, and historical and technological influences. Students will also investigate and develop an understanding of the history and working mechanics of a musical instrument of their choice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of key historical and technological influences in the evolution of music;
  2. analyse musical elements of historical music genres including rhythm, harmony, melody, chord progression, structure and instrumentation;
  3. demonstrate knowledge of the history and mechanics of musical instruments and their place in music; and
  4. apply standard forms of written musical notation to historical music genres.
