Course Aim

This course aims to provide students with an overview of health and safety principles, and their workplace application, an understanding of the principles and science of fire and fire suppression techniques, and duties of emergency wardens.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. play an active role in ensuring the health and safety of themselves and others in the workplace;
  2. identify the principles of workplace safety and demonstrate safe work practices in a given workplace;
  3. describe hazards that may harm workers, the work environment and organisations; explain health and safety requirements for hazard control; describe hazard control methods; and apply risk assessment procedures;
  4. identify fire classes and apply effective fire suppression techniques;
  5. identify, prepare for, and take action in a workplace emergency; and
  6. describe workplace evacuation requirements and undertake the duties of a fire and emergency warden.
